One most popular way of decorating homes during diwali is using the "Swastika symbol". The swastika is drawn as rangoli in front of the homes of hindu families, it is seen on the doors, many decorate the floors with diya lamps in the form of swastika and ofcourse, how can we forget the diwali thali, with the swastic mark on it. There are wall hangings, torans, with the swastika symbol which shows the divinity of the symbol in every homes during Diwali festival. Swastika is the symbol of divinity therefore it is a fundamental part of all religious ceremonies of Hindus and others. Swastikas can be seen adorned in ceremonies of birth, marriage and festivals.Significance of the Swastika Symbol
Swastika is the oldest religious symbol known to the human race and is widely recognised in various cultures all across the world. Swastika derives from the oldest way of life called Vedic Dharma or original form of Hindu Dharma. This is the form of a religion based on the philosophy of life taught by God through the four scriptures called Vedas. Swastika represents all four Vedas. Geometrically, the symbol consists of four parts and points towards four directions.
If the Swastika is turned around from the centre clock-wise or anti-clockwise, it does not make any geometrical or physical changes, which symbolizes the unchanging, all directional and endless nature of God.
In Sanskrit, Swastika means auspiciousness. There is a Shlok in Sanskrit which defines the Swastika “swasti na indro vruddhastravaha svastinah pusha vishvavedaha! Swasti nastakshya arishtanemihi svastino bruhaspatirdadhatu!! of yajurved" . The meaning is “May all mighty god of infinite glory be auspicious to us, May the all knowing Lords of the universe be of auspiciousness to us. May the powerful protection of the universe bring auspiciousness to us May the Lord of Lords. The supreme being brings fortune to us.”
But for many who donot have idea about the religious significance of Swastika, this symbol symbolises Nazism and evil. But then it is to be noted that Swastika had a long life before Hitler and the Nazis. It is one of the oldest symbols of mankind, a symbol representing peace, laughter, joy and good luck. Its Nazi links are only a minor speck in its very long existence. It is a symbol that deserves a better treatment from history. Swastika stands for truth, compassion, tolerance and happiness. It is worshiped as a symbol of good fortune and hence a part of diwali celebrations.
