DIWALI: The Hindu Festival of Lights, Festival of lights, Diwali

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, is celebrated by Hindus in India and all around the world in October / November. Every year on the dawn of Ammavaasa in the month of Kartik, the dazzling fireworks, sounds of crackers and the glittering lights and diyas announce the arrival of the most vibrant festival of India- Diwali. The word Diwali has its origin in the Sanskrit word "Deepavali" which means "rows of light". It is a 5 day long Hindu festival which is celebrated throughout the world with great zeal, enthusiasm and fanaticism. Diwali or deepavali is the festival signifying the victory of good against evil. While it is particularly sacred to Hindus, practitioners of other Indian religions also celebrate Diwali. Hindu, Sikh, Jainist communities all over the world commemorate Diwali with smaller festivals of their own. If you happen to be visiting India during Diwali, be prepared to be swept up in the festivities.
